Xavier School of Management, a premier private management institute, was founded in 1949 by Fr Quinn Enright, S.J. in the ‘steel city’ of Jamshedpur. Over the last six decades, the institute has grown into a top-ranking business management school of international repute with a wide portfolio of management programs and research publications. XLRI continually strives to contribute its mite to the professional growth and management of numerous organizations and institutions across industry sectors. The institute  has consistently been ranked amongst the Top 5 B-Schools alongside IIM A, IIM B and IIM C.

The institute has a sprawling campus with the scenic setting of the Dalma Hills in the North and the Tata Iron & Steel Company in the South. Hostel facilities at XLRI, are provided for students of the residential programs, consist of the four hostel blocks with more than 400 rooms in total. * XLRI also offers PGDM(GM) program for working professionals with more than 5 years of work experience.

Student Intake

The XLRI programs are characterised by a much smaller intake in comparison to the IIMs- this ensures that you know everyone else in the batch. The bonding between the XLRI student community is exemplary with seniors helping out juniors on a regular basis. The gender ratio is skewed towards the male population, and is especially high for the BM program.

XLRI 1

A majority of the class belongs to the engineering community – this is in contrast with the efforts made by the XAT authorities to make the test more “non-engineering friendly”. Maybe the same will change over the years to come.

XLRI 2

While almost 20-22 percent of the batch have no work experience, a major chunk of the cohort have 2 to 4 years of work experience. The HRM batch usually has a higher proportion of freshers. The number of students with more than 4 years of work experience is very low.

Quality of Education

Undoubtedly, XLRI scores high on most of the parameters that would define the quality of education as well as the learning experience of students who would join this B-School.

    • Not on the basis of your CET marks…but with a decent performance in XAT you will definitely get a shot at the GD-PI stage of the selection process in XLRI.

    • Hi Manish…the XLRI HR program is the best of the kind in the country. If you do not get into XLRI for HR – TISS is the next best option available. Will try to come up with a comparison in the times ahead:-)

  6. Sir, I,m Victor. Due to medical reasons I have two back papers in my Graduation and for this, my degree has been extended. Will it create trouble in the selection process? This thing has been killing me from inside. Please advise me.

    • No Victor. As long as you are able to justify the same during your PIs, it should not matter. Currently concentrate on maximising your score and percentile in the CAT.

  7. The blog is indeed very informative! I have a query regarding specializations!
Can Engineers opt for Human Resources i.e HRM in XLRI and in Symbiosis’ SCMHRD?

    Like

    • Thanks Priyesh. An engineer can opt for any specialisation while pursuing MBA – you would agree that marketing or finance would be as alien to engineering as HR is. You need to select the specialisiation based on your interest and where you are likely to excel in the future.

  8. sir, besides CAT & XAT i will also be appearing foe TISSNET & MICAT any advise on the same will be highly valuable. Considering my weakness in DI&LR and to some extend in QUANTS.

    Like

    • Quant & DI-LR do not pose any major challenge for the two other tests you plan to take. Your preparation for CAT and XAT will take care of these 2 tests as well – in fact you will find these 2 tests to be relatively much simpler. You need to rather focus onn GK for TISSNET and the creative aptitude questions of MICAT while additionally preparing for these tests.

  9. Hello Sir. I am Shreyas Bhatawdekar. I have graduated as B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from SRM University Chennai. I joined Infosys in August 2015 and have completed more than 1 year. I am attempting CAT this year. I have tried few mocks of IMS and my scores are very very low (Some where in the range of 40 to 50). Having known that there are only 32 days left for the actual CAT, how should I analyze my mocks and maximize my chances in the actual exam. The problem is that even though I have knowledge I am unable to connect and apply in the mocks. Is there any scope to improve my scores in the mocks and increase my chances in the actual exam ?

In exams like XAT and IIFT, how should I prepare for the GK section, so that I can tackle that section decently.
